$QuantumScape(QS)$ -
The host asks Tim what OEMs are now believing about solid state batteries that maybe they didn’t a few years ago? At 7:20, Tim’s response is that, “What’s been changing is accumulation of real world learnings and starting to deliver products for real world demos.”
- The host asks Tim what the main challenges of QS are right now. At 18:08, Tim’s response is that, “The conventional wisdom of solid state is that the main challenges are things like pressure – can you operate at low pressure? We’ve demonstrated that our batteries do not need to operate at pressure and I think a lot of that comes back to the [ceramic] separator. So it enables us to operate at low pressure. So I think that is one of the major challenges that has been solved.”
We did this in two stages that we rolled out last year and this year. You referred to Cobra which is what we call our current iteration, that has shrunk that key step down from hours to minutes, from like many hours to several minutes. That’s really key in enabling scalability. And so that I think was an unlock for our technology that’s gonna allow us to address these gigawatt hours, hundreds of gigawatt hours, terawatt hours that you were talking about that the battery market needs.”
Tim explains that they’re working closely with PowerCo to put their technology into their gigafactories that they’re installing in Germany, Spain, and Canada.
