Whirlpool Corporation has alerted the U.S. government to what it believes may be a case of tariff evasion by some of its overseas competitors. According to a Wall Street Journal report published late Sunday, the appliance giant suspects that certain foreign manufacturers are underreporting the value of their imports to reduce the amount they owe in tariffs.
The company’s claims are based on federal import data, which it says reveals a sharp decline in the declared customs value of various appliances beginning in June. Since tariffs are calculated based on declared value, a lower figure would result in significantly reduced payments to the U.S. government.
The WSJ reviewed the data and found striking examples:
Kitchen garbage disposals from China dropped in declared value from an average of $21 earlier in the year to just $9 in June
Gas ranges from Thailand fell to $175, down more than 50%
Washing machines from South Korea plummeted from $838 to $73
Despite these dramatic drops in declared import values, Whirlpool noted that retail prices for these products have remained largely unchanged. Tariff rates on these appliances range from 13% to 60%.
While Whirlpool has not filed a formal complaint, it has shared its findings with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other federal agencies. The company also reportedly confronted its competitors directly about the discrepancies.
This development comes at a challenging time for Whirlpool. The company manufactures 80% of its U.S.-bound appliances domestically but is currently grappling with weak consumer demand. Its stock has fallen 20% so far this year, and investor sentiment on platforms like Stocktwits has turned bearish.
Major foreign appliance suppliers to the U.S. include South Korea’s Samsung and LG both of which established U.S. manufacturing plants during President Trump’s first term as well as China’s Haier and Sweden’s Electrolux. In response to Whirlpool’s claims, GE Appliances, a Haier subsidiary, dismissed the allegations, suggesting they stem from Whirlpool’s own “lagging performance” and calling the accusations inaccurate.
